The "Cycles" series explores the intrinsic beauty of cycles in nature and life, strongly influenced by my visit to Japan. This experience profoundly shaped the development of these works, reflected in both the techniques and the philosophy that inspire each piece.
The visual elements in this series merge with Japanese tradition through the use of Sumi ink to create circular forms. These circles, though imperfect, follow the wabi-sabi philosophy, which embraces imperfection and impermanence as essential aspects of aesthetics and expression. The fluidity of the brushstrokes and the irregularity of the embroidered details in some pieces reference the traditional sashiko technique, a Japanese embroidery style that values simplicity and functionality.
The choice of materials is also closely linked to Japanese culture. I worked with cotton and linen fabrics, materials deeply associated with Japan’s artisanal heritage. The color palette of the initial works is dominated by black, gold, and red—an influence drawn from the temples I visited, carrying symbolic meaning in Japanese culture. Black and gold evoke sophistication and spirituality, while red is often associated with protection and vital energy.
As the series progressed, there was an evolution in the expression of these ideas. The first pieces reflect a more introspective moment, where simplicity and a restrained palette enhance contemplation and silence. Over time, this inner reflection gave way to an explosion of color and energy, symbolizing the act of sharing that introspection with the outside world.
The recurring circular form throughout the series holds profound meaning, both in a universal context and within Japanese culture. It represents the cycle of life, eternity, and a connection to the whole. In Japan, it is also a symbol of harmony and completeness—concepts that resonate deeply with the central theme of the series.
In "Cycles", I celebrate the way everything in nature—and in our own existence—unfolds in cycles. The series is an invitation to embrace imperfection, to appreciate the fleeting nature of things, and to understand that each moment is part of a larger, interconnected, and ever-changing cycle.

Com o tempo, essa reflexão interior deu lugar a uma explosão de cor e energia, simbolizando a partilha dessa introspecção com o exterior.
